Test: Janda's Hip Extension

Video Link

Background/Purpose

Procedure

Patient is placed prone on the table with the head, shoulders and legs in a neutral position. Without touching the patient, instruct them to "slowly lift your leg to the ceiling". The patient should only extend the hip 10-20 degrees. A passing test consists of motion occuring primarily at the hip joint with greater activation in the gluteus medius than in the hamstring muscles. The ideal firing pattern is: Hamstrings->G. Max->contralateral erectors->ipsilateral erectors. A failed test is indicated by over activation of the hamstrings without the glutes, thoracolumbar extensors of shoulders initiating the movement, or extension in the lumbosacral region.
Performed: Unilaterally
