Test: Active Prone Shoulder Internal Rotation
Video Link
Background/Purpose
Procedure
This test will assess active internal shoulder rotation in a non-postural position.
Patient lies prone with their shoulder and elbow at 90 degrees. Patient attempts to internally rotate the shoulder as far as possible. Goal > 60 degrees.
A fail may indicate a stability or mobility problem of the shoulder. A pass may indicate some dysfunction with shoulder extension.
There will be times when this test may be reduced such as with throwing athletes. In that case it is prudent to check the total arc motion (internal and external rotation). If the total arc angle is 150 degrees, assume normal shoulder mobility.
Performed: Unilaterally
