Test: Chin retraction
Video Link
Background/Purpose
Chin retraction is used to increase lower cervical extension as well as increase upper cervical flexion. This can help to identify a movement or stability deficit.
In some instances, there is a derangement of the tissues that can be reduced with this motion.
Procedure
Patient is seated with their arms at their side or on their lap. The patient retracts their head by moving the forehead and chin posteriorly essentially creating a double chin. This motion may create some recreate or exacerbate symptoms into the neck, shoulder or upper extremity. If it does, it is considered a failed test. If the motion produces no change in symptoms, the test is considered a pass.
Performed: Bilaterally
