Test: Double Leg Raise (aka Milgram's Test)
Video Link
Background/Purpose
This test has multiple variations and is designed to increase the load placed on the the hips, pelvis, and spine.
Procedure
Have the subject lay supine on the examination table. Ask the subject to lift one leg 4-6" off the table and then lift the other leg. Assess the difficulty and stability with doing this maneuver. If there is good proximal stability and no perceived difficulty, the clinician can apply a downward pressure on the legs to increase the load.
It is unknown what amount of force required to determine appropriate loading but it is presumed that the subject should be able to hold their legs elevated without significant difficulty or pain. If they are unable to do so, it may indicate weakness in stabilizing strength or joint or muscle dysfunction.
Performed: Bilaterally
