Test: Finger Abduction - Muscle Testing
Video Link
Background/Purpose
Finger abduction is performed by fanning out the fingers. Finger abduction is performed by the dorsal interossei muscles which originate on the metacarpals and insert onto the proximal phalanges. ROM of typcially 0-20 degrees. They are innervated by the ulnar nerve originating from C8-T1.
Procedure
Support the subjects wrist with their forearm pronated and their wrist in neutral. The fingers should be in extension and adducted.
Instruct the patient to "spread your fingers. Hold them. Don't let me push them together".
Because the dorsal interossei nor the abductor digit minimi will not tolerate much force, it is up to the clnician to make as to the appropriate grade. It is helpful to consider the subjects relative strength as well as the opposite side.
Performed: Unilaterally
