Background/Purpose
Procedure
Purpose: tests patient’s peripheral vision (CN II)
Instructions: Stand in front or (preferably) behind the patient. Have the patient stare at a point straight ahead and ask them to tell you when they can see your fingers moving in their periphery
Start with your hands posterior to the patient’s peripheral view. With one hand, wiggle your fingers and slowly move your hand anteriorly until the patient says he/she can see them.
Repeat on the other side.
Do this at three levels:
Above their head
At their eye level
At their shoulder level
Evaluation:
Look at how far you move your hands before they can see them.
Look for asymmetry from left to right
Look for one level that tests worse than the others
Performed: Bilaterally
