Background/Purpose
Procedure
Dejerine’s Triad is a three-part test referring to coughing, sneezing and bearing down as though having a bowel movement (Valsalva's) which increases intrathecal pressure indicating foraminal encroachment, disc protrusion (bulging), prolapse (herniation) or severe sprain/strain of the spine.
Valsalva maneuver is performed sitting upright with fist clenched. Take a deep breath and hold it while bearing down as if having a bowel movement. Sharp pain is not experienced. Next the individual replicates a cough while sitting erect. Lastly the individual is asked to sneeze. The individual can be asked if these produce sharp pain at a segmental level.
Performed: Unilaterally
