Test: Pelvic Distortion -manual testing

Video Link

Background/Purpose

Pelvic distortion occurs when there is a rotation of the pelvic bones relative to each other. With a pelvic distortion, there is an apparent un-leveling of the pelvis with the iliac crests possibly at different heights.
In a pelvic distortion, one ilia is rotated anterior-superior while the other is rotated posterior-inferior. As the hands are moved to mid-line, they will not meet. It is also important to assess the height of the greater trochanters since they should be at the same height.

Procedure

Place hands on iliac crests. The hands may or may not be level. Move the hands towards midline. If the hands meet at midline, the test is considered a Pass. If the hands do not meet at mid-line, it is considered a fail and indicates a counter-rotation of the pelvis.
Performed: Bilaterally

Dialog

Assess pelvic distortion/rotation by bringing hands from iliac crests to mid-line. Hands should meet at mid-line indicating a neutral pelvis.

Criteria

  • Hands meet at mid-line
  • Greater trochanters are level
