Test: Prone Passive Dorsiflexion
Video Link
Background/Purpose
Procedure
Assess passive dorsiflexion of the ankle.
Patient lies prone on the table with the knee extended. Clinician passively dorsiflexes the ankle with knee extended and then at 45 degrees. These results are averaged. Goal is 20-30 degrees.
The value is calculated as the average between the measurement with the knee straight and the knee extended.
A decrease of the measurement between the knee extended and the knee flexed could likely be a restriction in the gastrocnemius muscle.
A failed test could indicate a joint or posterior tissue restriction.
Performed: Unilaterally
